What do we long for?\u00a0 For connection.\u00a0 For safety.\u00a0 For love.<\/p>\n

Why do we sing? Because we hope.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tonight, Yom Kippur begins, and with it, a day when we sing from the midst of our broken hearts.<\/p>\n

We have accrued dross and weight that is unbearable \u2013 how can we throw off the miseries we experienced \u2013 much less committed this past year?\u00a0 How can we forgive ourselves, feel we have the right and the chance to try again, to start again, to believe again?\u00a0 Teshuva, <\/em>return — we pray for it.<\/p>\n

From the depths we must call out, from the knowledge and the full recognition of our failings.\u00a0 There must be a way to waken, to see the world clearly.\u00a0 We belong to this world.<\/p>\n

More importantly, the world belongs to us.\u00a0 We are responsible.<\/p>\n

When has night given way to morning?\u00a0 The rabbis say:\u00a0 When you look into the face of the person who is beside you and you can see that this person is your brother or your sister, then the night has ended.<\/p>\n

When you have learned that everyone is particular and yet connected to the source of life itself, to the earth we live on, to the people who share it with us, the morning has begun.<\/p>\n

May I sing the song of my people with commitment and joy.\u00a0 First voice.<\/em><\/p>\n

May I sing the song of humanity with hope. Second voice.<\/em><\/p>\n

May I sing all things divine, for they are everywhere around me, in the faces of those who walk beside me, in the souls of those I do not know, in the footprints of the creatures who hide in the trees.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n
