Oy, I thought. It\u2019s that<\/em> tone.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout what?\u201d I asked warily.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout that stick you have in your hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat stick?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat thing you keep twirling about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh,\u201d I said nonchalantly, \u201cI\u2019m just practicing. Once I can twirl this real good, I\u2019ll try juggling. Five balls in the air! Could be part of the show, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone is going to get hurt if you let it fly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are we really<\/em> talking about?\u201d I asked. But I put the stick down. \u201cIt\u2019s not this, is it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou want an honest answer?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are a stickler for the truth\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

She smiled. \u201cVery cute. Your ego,\u201d she added softly. \u201cWe are talking about your Self.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow so?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cHave you thought about the real<\/em> shtick \u2013 the one that is made of all the stuff in your head? It will all come tumbling out of your mouth if you go on like this. It won\u2019t be good.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you <\/em>think I should do? Give up the job?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are not seeing clearly,\u201d she said firmly. \u201cYour ego is leading you on.\u201d<\/p>\n

(Heads up: An annoying revelation is coming at you with the word \u201ctruth\u201d written on it. In 22 font. Bodoni, no less.)<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t like the ick in my stomach. I resisted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere is God in all this?\u201d she asked quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re mocking me, right?\u201d I parried. \u201cGod,\u201d I added dryly, \u201chas apparently not made up the divine mind. Sometimes I get absolutely nothing. Sometimes I get a warning. Sometimes it seems YHVH is just fine no matter what I do.\u201d I paused. \u201cAt least the officiating fee is fantastic. Makes for a nice change.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you feel<\/em> about it?\u201d<\/p>\n

I could tell I didn\u2019t like the question.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, I shouldn\u2019t have taken this gig in the first place,\u201d I admitted. \u201cSomething doesn\u2019t feel right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYup,\u201d she said. \u201cI thought so.\u201d<\/p>\n

We both went quiet.<\/p>\n

I like when the job is a fit. The visioning is invariably incredible, powerful beyond words. I love that flow going right through my fingertips into the sacred, sweet earth. I rejoice when the right words come in exactly the right moment. I don\u2019t know what they will be before they arrive. But I always know when heavenly magic is happening: The blessing, the truth comes from beyond me, from above me. It is goodness and sweetness and eternity all rolled into one.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a gift, and it always, always<\/em> makes me grateful.<\/p>\n

But I\u2019m human. I\u2019m susceptible, like anyone else. After all, even spiritual work needs to be paid for. It\u2019s not like it didn\u2019t take years to learn the craft. Sure, the negotiating, the interaction can take me into a different place.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s probably a sign when I get impatient to go, when my body gets me up too early in the morning. That usually means I just want to get the job done and get back home.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m off the divine grid. I teeter on the edge of the path, crowded and hemmed in.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook,\u201d she said, \u201cI\u2019ve known you for so long.\u201d<\/p>\n

I put my head in my arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can press the reset button,\u201d she said gently. \u201cYou can make your intentions holy. You can do it. Just let go and ask. Everything will turn out all right.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was a nice idea. Maybe, if I could slow down, I\u2019d hear better. See better.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stand on your shoulders,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019ve been doing that<\/em> for years, now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d she laughed. \u201cYou ride on them. Now, let\u2019s go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would be good,\u201d I said.\u00a0 \"donkey\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd how,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

It was finally my turn to smile. \u201cMa tovu<\/em>\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
